Best coastal destination in world - National Geographic

"Four Canadian areas have been named to National Geographic Traveler's "top rated" category in a list of the world's 99 best coastal destinations--with Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula, pictured, in the No. 1 spot, with 84 of a possible 100 points. The annual scorecard focused on 99 areas, from Antarctica to Tanzania, with a panel of 340 experts doing the ratings. The Avalon was noted for its out port villages, archeological sites, friendly people and significant tourism potential."

“The East Coast Trail begins very humbly in a small hollow surrounded by grassy knolls.  As we followed its gradual climb between a few rocky outcrops, nothing in its modest appearance prepared us for the superb view it was about to give us.  When it came, it took our breath away.  We were suddenly perched on the edge of the continent, between the earth and the sky and the stunning blue of the Atlantic Ocean.”

"We loved Newfoundland and especially our stay in Avista House. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful place with us. We read your books, listened to your music and prepared beautiful meals in your well-equipped kitchen. We hope there will be a next time."

"We had a FANTASTIC visit to Newfoundland - spectacular scenery and lovely people. The peacefulness and beauty of Tors Cove were the highlight of our trip. The house is just splendid – all the comforts plus an amazing attention to detail. We had superb views of the cove and of the young seal that frequently visited the wharf. Many thanks. We hope to return soon.

"Spectacular vistas everywhere. Weather couldn't have been better and Avista House was fantastic – you have a lovely home, where one would never tire of the view of Tors Cove. The hiking on the East Coast Trail was awesome. We had a wonderful time and will certainly be back.

"There are no words to describe our stay. Sun, fog, rain or wind…it didn't matter. We toured, took pictures, read – exactly what a holiday is supposed to be. Thank you Marcia and Ted. Hugs to Mary and Willie.

"Thank you for the stay in your beautiful home. We loved it and completely fell in love with the view!

"Perhaps it was the morning vista, two islets framed by beautiful Tors cove, the sturdy coastal houses haphazardly perched wherever one might fit, or the rhythmic sound of the waves but we were immediately charmed, calmed and thrilled to be at Avista House. This feeling persisted throughout our visit and we are left pondering our next sojourn. The new home's clean lines, comfort and openness are insured by the seascape facing picture windows. All amenities are provided. Tors cove is well situated with St. John's less than an hour away and the entire south coast of Avalon at one's fingertips. Newfoundland's lack of airs, its warm people, distinct culture and dialect, and rugged landscape are unique in North America. We felt very much at home and consider Avista House our Newfoundland address. Thank you! "
